About our Sydney Iyengar yoga studio

Getting to know us

The Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio was established in 1980 by Pixie Lillas, a Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher, director and principal teacher at the school. All the teachers have been trained by Pixie and hold an Iyengar Yoga teaching certificate. The Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio offers ongoing classes and courses from Beginner to Advanced level, teacher training, retreats, workshops and intensives for experienced students. We are the longest running Iyengar Yoga studio in Balmain, and are happy to be approaching our 40th year providing the highest standard of teaching to students of all ages.

Pixie Lillas

Advanced Junior 2

Pixie Lillas started yoga in 1976 with Dona Holleman in Italy and first went to the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India in 1977. She co-founded the Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio in 1980 and has been director and principal teacher there ever since.

Andrew Toland

Introductory Level II

Andrew began practising Iyengar Yoga in 2003 in Australia. He has lived and worked in Asia, and now resides in Sydney. Andrew is certified at Introductory II level. He has a broad range of experience in teaching both at university, where he is a lecturer in Landscape Architecture at UTS, and in the yoga studio.

Andy Taylor

Andy Taylor is an independent yoga teacher based in Sydney. He has been practicing yoga since 1999 and began teaching in 2016.

Chris Shakallis

Chris Shakallis has returned to Iyengar Yoga after an enthusiastic start in the mid 1980s. Since that time, he qualified as a Remedial Massage Therapist and he has continued with Massage therapy for some 30 years now.

Juliet Cobb Iyengar Yoga Teacher Sydney

Juliet Cobb

Juliet had the good fortune to be introduced to Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio and Pixie Lillas some 30 years ago. Inspired by Pixie’s teaching, Juliet made the decision to train as a teacher in the early 2000s. She is an accredited Introductory teacher.

Karin Polaine

Junior Intermediate 1

Karin started practicing Iyengar yoga in the mid 90s in the UK before she commenced her teacher training with Pixie in early 2000. She holds a Junior Intermediate 1 certificate and has run her own yoga school in Germany for 10 years before moving back to Sydney in 2016. Karin describes her experience of yoga as a never-ending journey of physical self-discovery, that has helped her to stay mindful and focused throughout the demands of daily modern life.

Philip Hersch

Philip started practicing yoga in Israel in the late 80’s having been recommended yoga as a way to improve his health. Under the guidance of his teacher Philippe Lombard, he introduced a yoga class for autistic adults at the hostel in which he was working at the time. He first attended RIMYI in 1995 and has returned every 2 years to attend the Institute in Pune. Having attended Euro Yoga in 1993 where he heard much praise for Pixie Lillas, on returning to Australia in 1996 he sought out and continued his teacher training with Pixie and was certified in 1997. He has taught at BYS for the last 20 years where many of his students have been at the studio for just as long. It is that long term student-teacher relationship that is at the heart of the yoga tradition; one in which the teacher learns as much from his students as he imparts.

Robyn Pearson

Robyn completed her teacher training with Pixie at the Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio in 2012 and she has been teaching at the Studio ever since. Robyn brings a maturity, genuineness and clarity to her teaching that her students highly appreciate.

Tiffany Hambley

Introductory Level II

Tiffany started practising Iyengar Yoga in Sydney in 2003. She spent several years in China and Hong Kong. She qualified as Introductory II teacher, and taught at the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hong Kong. While living in Asia, Tiffany regularly returned to Australia to learn from Pixie, and to undertake teacher training at Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio. Tiffany has been closely involved with the Iyengar Yoga Association of Hong Kong since its inception, and served as its Vice-Chair 2016-18. She is now based in Sydney, and continues to study with Pixie Lillas.
